Patrick Mahomes and Brittany Matthews Welcome First Child

Despite losing in this year’s Super Bowl to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes still has a lot to celebrate.

The 25-year-old and his fiancée, Brittany Matthews, welcomed their first child, a daughter named Sterling Skye, on Saturday, February 20.

Proud Parents

The proud parents announced Sterling’s birth on Instagram on Sunday, February 21, sharing a photo of Sterling holding on to her dad’s finger.

“Sterling Skye Mahomes 2/20/21 6lbs 11oz,” Matthews wrote on Instagram alongside the sweet photo.

A number of Chiefs players congratulated Mahomes and Matthews, including safety Tyrann Mathieu who wrote, “Congrats to you & your family!”

Union Station, which is a historic train station in downtown Kansas City, even celebrated the birth of Sterling by lighting up in pink and white Sunday evening.

Congratulations @brittanylynne8 and @PatrickMahomes on the arrival of Sterling Skye Mahomes. With tonight’s pink and white lighting, Union Station and Science City wish you and your new family many happy years together here in KC,” Union Station tweeted.

Successful 2020

Mahomes and Matthews, who started dating in high school, have had quite an exciting past year or so. Along with winning the 2020 Super Bowl and finding out they were pregnant, the couple also got engaged in September.

While Mahomes has had great success in his career thus far, he shared in a December interview with KCSP 610 Sports Radio that his engagement and baby were the best things to happen to him in 2020.

“Those things are special, that you don’t get to happen a lot in your life. Being able to be a dad and being able to get married here soon, I’m truly thankful for that,” Mahomes shared.

“I mean, [winning] the Super Bowl was awesome as well, but those things change your life, and it’s bigger than football.” He continued, “This will be a new thing for me, first-time dad. Being able to experience that and go through that, I want to do whatever I can to make our little girl’s life as best as it can possibly be.”

Silver Linings

The birth of Mahomes’s daughter comes just a couple of weeks after he and the Chiefs suffered a brutal loss to the Buccaneers in the Super Bowl.

The Chiefs, who were the favorites going into the game, couldn’t get anything going on offense and failed to score even just one touchdown.

“Obviously it hurts right now. It hurts a lot. But we’re going to continue to get better. We have a young group of guys that had a lot of success and we learned from that, but we’ve had a few failures and we have to learn from that,” Mahomes told reporters after the game, according to ESPN.

“We can’t let this define us. We have to continue to get better going into next year and prepare ourselves to hopefully be in this game again,” he shared.

While the Super Bowl loss was incredibly tough for Mahomes, it’s clear he still has so much to be grateful for. Congrats again, Patrick and Brittany!
